A Look Back at Automate 2017

Every two years, the manufacturing industry’s biggest players come together at Automate – the largest automation solutions expo in North America – to discover the latest cutting-edge robotics, vision and motion control technologies.

Hosted by the Robotic Industries Association (RIA), the expo showcases new and emerging solutions in automation technology that challenge conventional norms and redefine industry standards in manufacturing.

This year, we had the opportunity to exhibit at Automate and put our revolutionary augmented reality technology on display at Universal Robots’ (UR) booth.

In collaboration with Universal Robots, a global leader in collaborative robot technology, and Kubica Corp., a preferred systems integrator of UR robots, we developed a never-before-seen solution that combines human intelligence with the technological precision of cobots. Together, we’re driving a new era of man and machine collaboration.

Our joint demonstration at Automate included an interactive augmented reality application featuring a UR10 robot assembling a door panel. We chose to show a door panel build, as this is a labor-intensive process prone to human error, which is significantly reduced by having the UR cobot handle several of the assembly tasks, working in tandem with the operator.

By projecting a digital operating “canvas” directly onto the workspace, our technology combines the best of human intelligence and automation technology to direct the robot and operator through the required assembly tasks with audio and visual prompts, guidance, pacing and directions.

If you weren’t able to attend Automate, watch the video below to see our technology in action.

We had a great time exhibiting with Universal Robots and Kubica Corp. at Automate 2017 and look forward to expanding the applications for AR in automation.
